The 2016 Yorktown Freedom Run will again be an 8K race on the Yorktown Battlefield. There will also be a 5K fun run for the first time! Registration and awards will be at York High School on Memorial Day, May 30, 2016. The race flier and application will be available here soon.The location is a very nice course mostly using the Battlefield Tour Road. All runners will get a T-shirt; however, only those who register with a postmark by May 16th will be assured of getting the exact size they want.
There will be bottled water and plenty of refreshments after the race. Medals are given to runners in 26 categories and cash awards are given to the top three male and female runners in the Open and Master's categories.
The race commemorates Memorial Day and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom. The Freedom Run is operated by the Yorktown Rotary Club, and all proceeds go to the Yorktown Rotary Foundation to provide scholarships at local high schools and give support to a wide range of youth and community services as shown on the Community Service page.
163 runners entered the 2015 Memorial Day race. Will Christian of Norfolk won the event (for the 2nd straight year) with a time of 25:29. Jessica Riggs of Surry was the first woman with a time 32:49. Runners were as young as 8 years and as old as 75.
