Freedom Run

2010 YORKTOWN FREEDOM RUN:  A record 388 runners entered the 2010 Memorial Day race, an increase of 30% from 297 in 2009.  Ryan Carroll of Portsmouth won the event with a time of 16:00.  Jennifer Quarles of Williamsburg was the first woman with a time 19:33.  Complete results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club and are provided HERE.  You can observe the 2010 course at  www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=368532

All runners got a T-shirt with an original design worthy of the holiday, and plenty of refreshments were enjoyed by all. As before there were medals for runners in 26 categories and cash awards for the top three male and female runners in the Open and Master's categories.

The race commemorates Memorial Day and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom.  In a return to the Freedom Run tradition of running with the flag, Joshua Dover of Ft. Eustis ran the entire course with an oversize flag and finished in the top 20%.

The Freedom Run is operated by the Yorktown Rotary Club, and all proceeds go to the Yorktown Rotary Foundation to provide scholarships at local high schools and give support to a wide range of youth and community services as shown on the Community Services page.
