After 17 years of conducting the Yorktown Freedom Run on the Fourth of July, the Yorktown Rotary Club in conjunction with the Peninsula Track Club moved the Freedom Run to Memorial Day, May 26, 2008 at Grafton High School. This move was caused by changes initiated by the Yorktown Fourth of July Celebration Committee.

To ensure a quality race, the 2008 Freedom Run was limited to 400 runners with medals for male and female runners in 13 categories and cash awards for top three overall male and female runners in the Open and Master’s categories. With an 8:00 AM start time, the Freedom Run course took runners on paved and unpaved roads and trails around lakes and through scenic fields and woods that challenged elite runners and entertained families and children. There was a water point at the halfway mark with fruit and bottled water at the finish line.

The Freedom Run is the primary fund raising event for the Yorktown Rotary Foundation. All funds raised by this race provide scholarships at York County High Schools and give support to the wide range of youth and community services shown on this web site.

Under this new venue, the 2008 Yorktown Freedom Run executed another quality 5k race and continues to support Rotary's tradition of service to the community in future years.

The 2009 race promises to be bigger and better. Registration forms should be available on this web site early in 2009.
